Is seed testing really as straight forward as it sounds?

With Discovery Seeds Labs it is! You take a sample of your seed, you give it to us, and we test it. Then we give you valuable information about your seed. We can tell you about the purity of your seed, how well it will grow under stress, how well it will germinate, what diseases are present in the seed, and much, much more.

How to prepare your seed sample:

Make certain the sample is representative of the entire seed lot. Improper sampling is the greatest source of error in seed testing. To collect a representative sample it may be necessary to gather more seed than needed for a given test. After collecting the seed thoroughly mix it in the collection container. Hand sample or use a probe so that all areas of the seed lot are represented. If the seed is in a bin, sample it from the top, center, sides, and bottom. Don’t take your seed sample from beside the bin door. It might be more appropriate to collect subsamples as the seed is being transferred from a truck or bin.

Sending Samples Internationally:

If seed or soil samples need to be imported into Canada for testing at Discovery Seed Labs, please contact us at 306-249-4484 or info@seedtesting.com. Once we have the information required, Discovery Seed Labs works with the CFIA to submit applications required for obtaining the paperwork to receive the necessary permits to allow for the sample to enter Canada and be analysed in our facilities.

How to bring your seed sample:

Place samples in a container that will not open during transport. You don’t need one of our envelopes, a cloth bag lined with a plastic bag is ideal. If packaging several samples in one container, please package samples so that seed cannot become mixed. If using plastic bags, consider using two bags as a double wrap for each sample–since plastic bags can break open easily.
